Realtime Pelvic Ultrasonography of Ovarian Follicular Development

Abstract
Ovarian follicular growth during the periovulatory periods was measured using real-time ultrasound in 31 patients during 62 ovulatory cycles.
Among them, 13 cycles (9 patients) had normal spontaneous ovulatory cycles, 42 cycles (18 patients) had clomid induced cycles, and 7 cycles (4 patients) had pergonal induced cycles.
The results were as follows:
1. The mean maximum follicular diameter in normal ovulatory cycles was 24.5=¡¾1.8 S.E.M., 24.4=¡¾0.7 S.E.M. in clomiphene induced cycles and 25.9 =+-1.2 S.E.M. in pergonal induced cycles.
2. The number of mature follicles per cycle in normal ovulatory cycles (1.3) was larger than drug induced cycles¡¯ (2.1, 2.3), which was statistically significant.
3. The postovulatory ultrasonographic findings of ovarian follicles were decrease in ovarian size (34 cases), disappearance of ovarian follicles (23 cases) and irregular change of follicular shape c or s increased internal echoes (19 cases).
4. The real-time ultrasound examination of the developing ovarian follicle appears to be a useful technique for assessing the progress of the ovarian cycle, especially in the management of the infertile couple.
